A 44-year-old tourist from Canada was stabbed in the leg during what police have described as a random attack near New York City’s Bryant Park on Monday evening. The incident took place at around 17:30 local time near the south-east corner of the park, close to 40th Street and Sixth Avenue, an area that attracts large crowds during the winter season. The man was reportedly tying his shoe when he was approached by an unknown individual who stabbed him once in the left leg before fleeing the scene. Police said the suspect and victim did not appear to know each other, and no argument or confrontation was observed prior to the attack. The assailant ran off immediately after the stabbing, and no arrests have yet been made.

Emergency services responded quickly, and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and he was reported to be in stable condition. Authorities have not released his name. Bryant Park, located in Midtown Manhattan, is a popular destination for both tourists and residents, particularly during the winter months when its seasonal village and ice rink draw thousands of visitors daily. The attack occurred just outside the park’s perimeter, in a busy commercial area near major transport links.

New York Police Department officers have increased their presence in and around the park as the investigation continues. Detectives are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and appealing to witnesses who may have been in the area at the time. An NYPD vehicle remained stationed near Bryant Park following the incident as officers secured the scene. City officials have sought to reassure the public, emphasising that violent crime in the area remains relatively rare. Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline.
